WhatsApp will charge for more messages from October 2026: get ready now
Meta charges per delivered message, and on October 1, 2026 the service-window exemption ends. How to adjust sales and support without overspending.

If you sell or support customers through the WhatsApp Business API, your cost per conversation is about to change again. And this time it's worth acting before the date, not after.
What changes on October 1, 2026
Back in April 2026 Meta had already shifted its model: you're charged per delivered message, not per 24-hour conversation as before. The next adjustment lands on October 1, 2026:
- Service messages you send inside the 24-hour customer service window — the one that opens when a customer writes to you first — start being charged.
- Utility templates sent inside that same window stop being exempt and are also charged per delivered message.
For reference, in July 2026 approximate rates for Mexico were around $0.0436 USD per marketing message, $0.0080 for utility and $0.0207 for authentication. Individually they look like pennies; multiplied by a twenty-message conversation across hundreds of customers a month, they stop looking like pennies.
The real consequence: inefficient conversations now cost money
Until now, messy support cost you time. From October it costs time and money per message. Three things change in how you should operate:
- Resolving in fewer messages beats replying fast. Ten back-and-forths to confirm a price aren't just a bad experience anymore — they're a line item.
- Scattered information gets expensive. If your rep has to say "let me check inventory and get back to you," you're paying for two conversations where there should have been one.
- Utility templates now require judgment. Confirmations, status updates and reminders are still worth it, but you have to pick the ones that actually move a sale or a collection.
How to cut cost without cutting service
What works isn't sending fewer messages — it's sending the right ones, complete, the first time:
- A centralized inbox with the customer's history in view: no asking for data they already gave you.
- An AI assistant connected to your data, able to answer available stock, current price, order status or outstanding balance in the same message, without escalating to a human just to look it up.
- Replies with the action included: send the quote or the payment link in that same reply, not three messages later.
- Templates prioritized by impact: collection reminders and order confirmations before generic announcements.
- Automated follow-ups with judgment, to revive cold conversations without blasting your whole database.
Why this is a systems problem, not a messaging problem
No chat tool solves cost-per-message on its own, because the waste doesn't originate in WhatsApp: it originates in not having inventory, price and customer balance at hand while you're typing.
In Centella, the WhatsApp inbox lives next to the CRM, the catalog, inventory and collections. The assistant queries the real figure and answers on the spot, and from that same conversation you generate the quote, the order or the invoice. Fewer messages per sale, no re-keying, and a conversation that actually ends in something.
Checklist before October 1
- How many messages does it take me, on average, to close a sale today?
- Do my reps have inventory, price and balance visible while they chat?
- Which utility templates am I sending, and which ones actually convert?
- Am I paying for follow-up messages to contacts who will never buy?
- Can I measure WhatsApp cost per closed sale, or do I only see the total bill?
Frequently asked questions
Should I go back to the free WhatsApp Business app? Only if you're a one-person operation with low volume. As soon as you have a team, shared history and follow-up, the savings evaporate into lost sales and poor coordination.
Can a bot make the experience worse? A bot that knows nothing about your operation, yes. An assistant connected to your inventory and receivables resolves in one message what takes a human four lookups.
How long does it take to implement a centralized inbox with AI? Weeks, not months, if the CRM and catalog already live in the same system.
There are only a few weeks left before the change. Request a Centella demo and we'll show you how to close more sales with fewer messages, or get in touch to review your WhatsApp operation.
